Feeder Cattle Imports From Mexico Set To Resume In January

Imports of feeder cattle from Mexico are expected to partially resume the week of Jan. 20, with full live animal movements anticipated later, according to a Drovers report. The initial reopening will be gradual to implement and test new protocols.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) suspended cattle and bison imports from Mexico on Nov. 22, 2024, after detecting New World screwworm near Mexico’s southern border. The pest poses a significant risk to cattle health, prompting the development of stringent screening protocols.

The suspension has led to an estimated 250,000-300,000 fewer cattle imports and supported higher U.S. feeder cattle and calf prices, again that according to Drovers.
