New Mexico Takes Action After New World Screwworm Detection

New Mexico officials and ranchers are stepping up efforts to deal with New World screwworm after the parasite was found in a horse in Grant County. It’s the state’s second confirmed case this year.

The discovery surprised some cattle producers because Grant County is about 100 miles north of the Mexican border.

Earlier this year, screwworm was also found in a dog in Lea County.

Meanwhile, the Santa Teresa cattle crossing is scheduled to reopen Thursday, after being closed for nearly two years because of screwworm concerns in Mexico.

Before the closure, between 3,000 and 3,500 cattle crossed there each day.

Officials say the shutdowns at Santa Teresa and Columbus have cost New Mexico ranchers billions of dollars in cattle trade.

The USDA is also releasing about 1.8 million sterile flies each week along the border. The goal is to reduce the population of fertile screwworm flies and slow the spread of the pest.

Ranchers say cattle entering through the reopened crossing will go through inspections, treatment, dipping, and other health protocols.

With cooler weather approaching, producers hope conditions will become less favorable for screwworm flies.

If everything goes as planned, the Columbus crossing could reopen in about a month.

For livestock infected with New World screwworm, the FDA has authorized ivermectin as a treatment.

Diesel Prices Put Pressure On Producers

U.S. diesel prices have jumped sharply this year, reaching about $6.29 a gallon in mid-September, up more than 80% since January. The higher prices are adding to costs for farmers, ranchers, and truckers. Some lawmakers are calling for limits on diesel exports, while analysts question how much that would lower prices. Tyson Foods says higher energy costs will also be passed along to customers.
